El colegio Puente III de El Astillero 'supports' el Puente de los ingleses

Nearly 350 students and 50 teachers from Colegio Puente III in El Astillero will go next Monday at midday to the “Puente de los Ingleses” or Orconera’s Bridge to celebrate a supporting and recognition ceremony to this monument, recently declared  asset of local interest (Bien de Interés Local –BIL-) by the Government of Cantabria.

It is an activity which closes the project “Apadrina un monument” (“Support / Sponsor a monument”) promoted by the Consejería de Educación, Cultura y Deporte of the Government of Cantabria in order to motivate and promote attitudes of respect, appreciation and protection, in which this group of students has participated.

Among the different activities which have been developed inside this initiative are: making miniatures, writing lyrics, making posters and murals, writing essays, drawing competitions, photos, even interviews with the mayor and with the old neighbours who know both the story and the history of this monument.

El Puente de los Ingleses

     

      A group of 6^th Grade students from our school, Colegio Puente III, attended the opening ceremony of the school competition “Apadrina un monumento” (“Support / Sponsor a monument”). 

      The project they will develop will be connected to supporting “el Puente de los Ingleses”, also known as Orconer’as Loading Bridge, located in El Astillero.

        

   Among the main aims of the Consejería de Educación, Cultura y Deporte of the Government of Cantabria is to support culture, and more specifically, to motivate and promote attitudes of respect, appreciation and protection of our cultural assets through its knowledge and understanding.

     The competition consists in selecting a monument from our autonomous community which they will symbolically “adopt”; in order to do this they will present several studies and researches about it.

The Government of Cantabria has declared the Orconer’as Loading Bridge in El Astillero asset of local interest in the monument category; it is the first award of this kind which our council receives.

Cortina has stated that it is “great” news and, although the neighbours already knew the “value” and “importance” of this structure, this brings a “seal of quality”, apart from guaranteeing its protection and helping it to be known throughout Cantabria and outside our autonomous community as well.

He has emphasized the Orconera’s Bridge is part of the history of El Astillero, “always” linked to the sea, ship building and mining development, as reported by the town council in a press release.

The mayor has explained that the also known as Orconera’s Bridge is a structure which symbolizes the times of mining development in the Bay of Santander and Peña Cabarga Range.

 

It was inaugurated in 1894, it was remodelled in 1902 and it was restored in 1994 because of the Cantabrian dual carriageway works.

The mining businessman José Mac Leman was responsible for its construction, one of the best well-preserved of its kind in the North of Spain and it owes its name to being used, since its construction at the end of the 19^th century, to transport iron ore in ships with Great Britain as its main destination.
